Louise’s client had a very traumatic upbringing at the hands of relatives. He was taken into care when he was 9 ½ years old and has spent the last 11 years in various care facilities.
Louise, our case manager is a specialist therapist for those on the autism spectrum and for those who have experienced trauma. Louise’s client wanted to go back to his childhood area to meet with his half-siblings who are also in care. It was important for this client to have people whom he trusted to support him on this trip and named the case manager and one of his support workers as the most key people in his life.
The case manager worked with the client’s solicitors to arrange a trip for 6 days so that the client could meet with his siblings and create positive memories in a place that holds significant trauma. Louise worked collaboratively with the client to provide a safe environment where he felt a sense of control and was empowered to make his own choices.
Louise had an adjoining room to provide the client with a sense of security and provide on-call support during the night. The visits to family and familiar places were triggering memories and Louise guided him through these memories.
The client was very happy to go on the visit and Louise was able to support the client and their support worker in coming to terms with some of the memories that he had to confront.
From the client:
“It was good to have Louise to support me on this trip especially helping me meet my family which can be difficult. I would like Louise to come with me on future trips as she is a therapist as well as a case manager. “
From support worker:
'Louise has been incredibly supportive during the trip and has helped me understand how to better support our client'
