This content series aims to highlight inspirational client stories alongside incredible work from our associates in the field of case management and rehabilitation following a serious injury.

This article covers our Associate Sara Warr’s client (GF). GF is a 72 yr old very active male who was in a bike vs car accident in July 2018.

Prior to his accident, GF was a big walker, runner, mountain climber, cyclist, driver, allotment gardener, reader and lifelong philosophy student, family man and still worked as a counsellor and for the CAB.

Following the accident, GF suffered a severe traumatic brain injury (despite wearing a cycle helmet), which resulted in residual physical injuries to back and leg and higher executive functioning issues, depression/anxiety, planning and memory issues.

Following the accident

This accident resulted in 3 months in hospital and 3 months in rehab unit in Cambridgeshire.

Following hospital release, Sara implemented therapy services in place to maximise his rehab.

  • OT/ PT/ SLT/ neuropsychology/ neuropsychiatry / orthotics services put in place. It was important to choose experienced and suitable therapists for this.
  • PT got him back to walking and running, cycling (off-road only) and climbing wall.
  • He was unable to read after leaving the rehab unit and SLT introduced him to Michael Morpurgo children’s books and his reading developed from there and he’s back to highbrow philosophy books again.
  • OT did structured ADL life skills work with him
  • A neuropsychologist has and continues to do in depth work with GF and his wife and linked with a neuropsychiatrist who provided medication for low mood.

GF’s wife required counselling following her husband’s accident.

  • Put in place: Cleaners / handyman / gardener / benefits applications
  • Bespoke buddy sought that had a strong interest in philosophy and walking.
  • Managed 6 monthly MDTs with therapy team/family and both legal parties

This case was settled in Nov 2021 with Case Management to continue as required.

  • CM putting in place a Rehab Assistant to help GF plan his days / plan trips away / support with organisational skills and generally take over from the therapy team who are now reducing their input.
  • Driving assessment is also on the cards now.

Comments from the client

Frost stated: “Sara has been my connection to the world, the connection to a framework that makes things happen for me since my accident”

Frost’s wife added: “We were completely at a loss when G (Frost) came back after six months, from hospital and rehab. Sara came to our rescue. Her support and practical help since then is immeasurable. I don’t think we could have made it through without her, or that G would have come so far without her expert advice and recruitment of his therapy team”.

The insurer added: I’ve enjoyed working with you. It certainly makes it easier to be supportive of rehabilitation where you have a case manager you have confidence in and trust. It has been really pleasing to see Graham’s progress. So, thank you.

What exemplary work from Associate Sara Warr in exceptional circumstances for her client!
